What is stress?
Stress is the physical or mental response to an external factor, such as having an important test to study for or having an illness. A stressor can be something that happens just once (such as a car accident) or can happen repeatedly over a long time (such as having lots of homework).

  • When you are feeling stressed, your body releases hormones that produce the “fight-or-flight” response. When this happens, your heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure all increase, your muscles tighten up and you sweat more.

  • Everybody feels stress from time to time, and usually, the stress goes away once the situation is resolved. However, when stress becomes overwhelming, it can sometimes lead to an anxiety disorder.

Why is managing stress important?

One of the most common dental problems in children is cavities (in medical terms these are called dental caries).

What is a cavity?

  • Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surfaces of your teeth that develop into little openings or holes. If left untreated, these can get bigger and deeper and lead to a severe toothache, infection, and tooth loss.

We all know that our blood pressure is checked when we see a medical provider, but most people don’t truly understand what that number represents or why it is important.

What is blood pressure?

Each time your heart beats, it pumps blood through blood vessels called arteries to get the blood throughout your body. This blood provides the oxygen and energy your body needs to function. As the blood is moving through the arteries, it pushes against the sides of those blood vessels. Blood pressure is the force of the blood against the blood vessel walls.
Blood pressure consists of two numbers: systolic and diastolic.

Dr. Haderlie graduated with his BA in Biology from Utah State University and his DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. David completed his certificate and MDS in Endodontics from the University of Connecticut.

What is an ankle sprain?

  • There are tough bands of tissue called ligaments that hold the bones together in the ankle. A sprain occurs when you roll your ankle too far inward or outward and stretch 1 or more of those ligaments too far. This causes pain, swelling and sometimes bruising, and it can cause the ankle to become unsteady or painful to walk on.

How do you test for an ankle sprain?

  • A medical provider will examine your ankle and ask questions about how the injury happened. Sometimes an x-ray is recommended to check for broken bones.

How are ankle sprains treated?
