What is an ankle sprain?

  • There are tough bands of tissue called ligaments that hold the bones together in the ankle. A sprain occurs when you roll your ankle too far inward or outward and stretch 1 or more of those ligaments too far. This causes pain, swelling and sometimes bruising, and it can cause the ankle to become unsteady or painful to walk on.

How do you test for an ankle sprain?

  • A medical provider will examine your ankle and ask questions about how the injury happened. Sometimes an x-ray is recommended to check for broken bones.

How are ankle sprains treated?

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month.

What is mental health?

  • Mental health (or “behavioral health”) includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It plays a role in how we think, feel and act.

Why is mental health important?

  • It affects how we connect with others, make decisions and handle stress.
  • Mental and physical health are equally important for our overall health, and they can influence one another. For example, depression can put you at higher risk for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, but chronic conditions (such as diabetes) can also put you at higher risk for mental illness.

Are “poor mental health” and “mental illness” the same thing?

We’ve all heard of acid reflux but what is it? What should I know about it and do I need to see a doctor?

If you have questions, please reach out to us at the Quincy Student Health and Wellness Center at (509) 787-8943.

We are here to help!

What is it?

  • Our stomachs contain strong acid (almost as strong as battery acid!), which helps break down food to make it easier to digest. When that acid backs up into the esophagus (the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach), it causes acid reflux

What are the symptoms of acid reflux?

Chloe Kesterson graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Health Studies-Health Sciences and received her Master of Science Physician Assistant Studies from Marietta College.
Chloe is new to Moses Lake but she was born and raised here in the Pacific Northwest. She has a love of sports and is a former Division 1 college athlete. Chloe also enjoys being outside fishing, hiking, and spending time with her fiance and their fur babies.

Bjorn completed his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Utah State University, finishing his education with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Idaho State University.
"I enjoy most about working for MLCHC is being able to live and work in a rural community and having the opportunity to see the improvements that come as individuals take action and make changes to improve their health and wellbeing."
Bjorn likes going on family adventures, climbing, hiking, hunting, and fishing. Bjorn is also bilingual in both English and Dutch!

Heather has an impressive academic background with her Undergraduate and her Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Christian Counseling at Liberty University. Beyond her qualifications, Heather shares the same values as MLCHC - "that people don't go to the doctor when they are well, but when they are not, and what a beautiful opportunity to intervene and offer care".

March is National Nutrition Month!

This month we are focusing on nutrition and what it really means to "eat healthy" and what eating healthy does for our bodies.

We all know “nutrition” and eating a “nutritious diet” is important…but what IS a healthy diet?
And why is it important?

A healthy diet consists of:

A wide variety of fruits and vegetables

  • This includes fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables! With canned and frozen fruits and veggies, make sure to look for options with lower sodium (salt), because too much sodium can raise your blood pressure.

Whole grains (such as whole-wheat bread, whole-wheat pasta, brown rice, and oatmeal)

March is National Nutrition Month!

We all know “nutrition” and eating a “nutritious diet” is important…but what IS nutrition? And why is it important?

Nutrition is the study of food and how it affects the health and growth of the body.
Nutrients are substances found in foods that our bodies use to grow, reproduce and survive.

There are 6 major nutrients we get from food:

1.    Proteins

  • Proteins are important for growth and development. They also help your body repair tissue, carry oxygen, digest foods, and regulate hormones.
  • Get proteins from meat, legumes (beans, peas, lentils), nuts, seafood, and eggs

2.    Carbohydrates

Education: Antibiotic Use and Overuse

“I’m sick! Why won’t my healthcare provider prescribe antibiotics?”

What are antibiotics?

Antibiotics are medications that kill bacteria that cause certain infections (such as strep throat, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, some ear infections, etc.), thereby treating the infection and sometimes even saving lives.

So…what’s the problem?

Unfortunately, using antibiotics too often leads to something called “antibiotic resistance.”

This happens when germs like bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs that usually would kill them, making them antibiotic-resistant germs.

Because of this, it makes infections harder and harder to treat.

Kris received her Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Washington and completed her Nursing degree at Olympic College. She earned her Master's as an FNP from Washington State University. Kris is returning to MLCHC and is excited to work with our patients again. She and her husband of 30+ years and their children have been in Moses Lake for over 15 years and love the community, people, and ample opportunities for outdoor play.
